🎄🧊 Christmas Ice Sculptures: Holiday Ideas Carved in Ice
Updated: Oct 8

There’s something special about carving for Christmas. Each year brings familiar holiday traditions along with new ideas, giving us the chance to create everything from playful Christmas characters and colorful ice luges to life-size sculptures and entire winter wonderlands. We’ve gathered some of our favorite ways to bring the season to life in ice! Looking for inspiration? You’ll find even more Christmas ice sculptures in the gallery at the bottom.

🎨🧊 Adding Color to the Ice
Clear ice is only the beginning. When a design calls for bold color, our artists can use the carved surface like a canvas. After carving the design at different depths to create dimension, colored sand is placed into individual areas, following the shapes and details of the sculpture. A snow-like layer called snowfill is then packed over the sand to keep the color in place, followed by water that freezes everything together. The combination of carved depth and layered color helps characters and patterns take on a more three-dimensional look within the ice.

❄️🎄 Christmas Live Ice Carving
Live ice carving gives guests a behind-the-scenes look at how a sculpture takes shape, from the first cuts with a chainsaw to the final details carved by hand. A typical performance lasts one to two hours with a minimum two-block sculpture. Lito brings his carving tools to the event, with access to electricity needed on-site for the chainsaw.
Behind the tools is decades of experience. Internationally recognized ice carver Angelito Baban has competed and earned awards around the world, most recently taking first place at the 2026 World Ice Art Championships in Alaska. It’s a chance to see the same skill used on the competition stage up close at your holiday event.

During the 2025 ZooLights season at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, Lito carved live on Friday nights, giving visitors a chance to see the process from the first cuts to the final details.
With the sound of the tools, ice flying and the design gradually appearing, live carving turns a Christmas ice sculpture into part of the entertainment!

🥂❄️ Ice You Can Interact With
Christmas ice doesn’t have to be something guests simply admire from across the room. We’ve created full-size ice thrones for holiday photos, ice bars with carved spaces for bottles and drinks, and chilled displays designed for caviar, seafood and other foods. These pieces combine sculpture with function, giving guests another way to experience the ice while still making it part of the overall holiday décor.

❄️🏙️ Creating a Winter Wonderland in Ice
For larger holiday events, we can take ice far beyond a single sculpture. Multiple large-scale ice sculptures can work together to transform an entire space into a winter wonderland, creating an experience guests can walk through and explore. For a holiday event at CityCenterDC, we created a collection of detailed, life-size ice sculptures that turned the space into an immersive seasonal display. From individual figures to a complete scene, larger installations give us the opportunity to think beyond a single sculpture and create an entire world in ice.

🎄🧊 Bring Your Christmas Ideas to Ice
Every Christmas project starts with an idea. Whether it becomes a colorful ice luge, a custom centerpiece, a live carving or an entire winter wonderland filled with life-size sculptures, the possibilities go far beyond a traditional block of ice. Each holiday season gives us another opportunity to experiment, create and turn new ideas into something guests can experience in ice.
